Q. It has long been claimed that art and adventure go hand in hand. What is the connection between adventurous spirit and creative vision?
The will to live and experience life takes courage. Art is personal. It is a freedom that allows us to express our ‘self’ and be willing to share our ‘self’ with the viewer. This spirit is hopefully what they see in the vision. Photography. Directing. I am a storyteller bringing my world behind the lens into yours … life is an adventure if we choose to live it. And I choose to live.
Q. If you were a superhero, what would your powers be?
I would love to have the power of the ‘voice’. Listening to singers and absorbing their lyrics can be healing and inspiring. Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”. Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. Power.
Q. What does it mean to be living on the edge?
Not knowing what is next.
Q. Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote: “There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find adventure and those who go secretly hoping they won’t.” In your experience, does this stand true?
Fear is a huge factor of where your road leads and what adventures if any, someone would take. For me, as soon as I open my door, the adventure begins. You never know who you are going to meet around the bend. I just have to be ready before I open that door.
Q. What, do you think, is the ultimate adventure?
Trusting your instincts, and taking that first step. – Monique Lai
